Bean Shape

Harvesting and Processing

The harvesting and processing for the two beans are also different.

When the cherries of the coffee plant matures, it is ready for harvest. The beans are then dried in the sun or by drying machines until 10-12% of humidity level has been achieved. It can also be processed through wet milling, where beans are washed thoroughly with water after drying and fermentation. The end product is the green bean that is ready for roasting.

A cocoa bean comes from a pod that grows from the branches of a cocoa tree. Once the pod is ripe, it is ready for harvest and sorting. Then, it will be fermented and finally dried until a 7% humidity level is achieved.

Caffeine content

Coffee beans have higher caffeine content than cocoa beans. So if you need to keep your mind active,  coffee is a perfect choice.

Antioxidant content

Coffee beans have lower antioxidants than cocoa beans.

Calories content

The calories in a cocoa bean are higher than in a coffee bean. In fact, 100 grams of cacao beans have 578.9 calories, compared to coffee beans of the same size that only have 284 calories. Cocoa is not a choice by people who are seriously losing weight. People who try to lose weight drink coffee rather than cocoa beverages.
