How To Clean Nespresso Machine? [ Verto & Original Models]

Nespreso machines are really easy to use. And making coffee is also very convenient. However, as much as the coffee making is automatic, it is still important to clean Nespresso machine regularly for a optimal coffee experience.

Why cleaning Nespresso machine is necessary?

Prolonged use of the Nespresso coffee machine will result in coffee residue accumulating in the machine. This will affect the taste of coffee as the coffee comes into contact with the coffee residue when it flows into our cup. Sometimes, you can also see coffee grounds in your cup as a result. Hence it’s important to deep clean the coffee machine regularly.

How to clean Nespresso machine?

Cleaning Nespresso machine is an important step to ensure you can use the machine for the longest period in a good condition. There are steps you can do on daily basis, and on a periodic basis.

Daily cleaning tips:

• Eject used coffee capsules from the Nespresso machine after use. This will prevent the coffee residue from coating and solidifying in the insertion slot.
• Start a hot water rinsing cycle through your machine before your first use and last use of the day. This hot water can purge out any coffee powder or oils remaining in the machine so as to prevent clogging.
• After rinsing, lift up the lever to let humidity escape and water dry in the coffee machine. (If you are not going to use the coffee machine for some time, use the ’emptying’ mode to empty the machine)
• Empty the contents from the drip tray. The spillover coffee and water mixture may encourage bacteria growth. You won’t want that to happen.
• Empty the capsule container by end of day for the same hygiene reason.
• Clean milk frothing system if you are using a Nespreso with milk frother.

• Clean the water tank daily and replace with fresh water as water quality also affect the coffee taste.
• The capsule insertion slot inside the coffee machine has an attached filter which comes into contact with the capsule aluminum foil. This filter needs to be cleaned to prevent coffee residue. If you can’t clean this daily, at least clean it weekly for hygiene and avoid coffee residue buildup. Scrub this filter using a wet toothbrush and let hot water run through the filter for  2 to 3 times using the Lungo button.

Periodic cleaning:

Descale your Nespresso regularly once every 3 months or when you have use the machine to make 300 capsules. This will remove the lime buildup in the machine resulting from the heating of the impurities in the water. If you are using hard water, it’s better descale more often as the harder water contains more impurties. Should I use vinegar to clean Nespresso machine?

It is not recommended to use vinegar for cleaning Nespresso. Vinegar contains plain acetic acid which may damage the Nespresso machine. In addition it may also contains other compounds with flavouring and this will have a residual effect on the coffee taste.

1. Start by rinsing and cleaning the water tank, lid, drip tray and cup support.
2. Fill the water tank with fresh water and put back onto the machine.
3. Put a 1 liter capacity container below coffee outlet.
4. Open the head of the machine and eject used capsule. Empty capsule container and rinse it.
5. Close the machine head and lock it by turning handle left to “LOCKED” position.
6. Let the machine complete the heating up. When the lights turn steady white, press button 3 times in 2 seconds. Wait for the water to flow out. Then the cleaning cycle procedure will automatically run for 7 minutes.
7. To exit cleaning procedure any time, press the button again and the button light will turn steady. To continue the cleaning, press the button again.

1. Start by rinsing and cleaning the water tank, cup support. Then fill the water tank with fresh water and put back onto machine.
2. Put a 0.5 liter capacity container below coffee outlet.
3. Open the head of machine and eject any used capsule. Empty the capsule container and rinse it. Close the machine head and turn lever towards the left to “Locked” position
4. Press button 3 times in 2 seconds. Wait for 2 minutes for the water to flow out and the cleaning cycle procedure will automatically run for 5 minutes.
5. To exit procedure at any time, press the button and the button will return to a steady light. To resume cleaning, press button again.

How to clean Nespresso VertuoPlus

1. Start by rinsing and cleaning the water tank, cup support. Then fill the water tank with fresh water and put back onto machine.
2. Put a 0.8 liter capacity container below coffee outlet.
3. Open the head of machine and eject any used capsule. Empty the capsule container and rinse it. Close the machine head and turn lever towards the left to “Locked” position
4. Press button 3 times in 2 seconds. During the cleaning cycle, you will see blinking orange lights. Wait for 2 minutes for the water to flow out and the cleaning cycle procedure will automatically run for 5 minutes.
5. To exit procedure at any time, press the button and the button will return to a steady GREEN light. To resume cleaning, press button again.

2. Remove the capsule bucket, unlock the cup support, then pull it forward and lift upwards to detach the cup support. Clean and rinse the cup support
3. Wipe the inside of the machine with a damp cloth. Then reassemble the cup support.
4. Detach water tank and its lid, clean them with odorless detergent and then rinse them using warm water. Finally pour in fresh water into the water tank.

2. Put a container below the coffee outlet.
3. Press the espresso or lungo button to allow water to flow through the machine to wash out any residue in the machine.
4. Empty the capsule container. Detach the drip tray, capsule container, water tank. Clean and rinse them. Then reassemble them.
5. Use a soft damp cloth to wipe the coffee outlet.
6. Rinse the hot water nozzle with drinking water to wash away dirt residue
7. Disassemble the milk system components and either handwash or wash them in the upper level in your dish water.
8. Wipe the machine exterior with a damp cloth. If needed, use mild cleaning agent.
