Making Your Espresso Machine Search Easier

Best Nespresso Machine Reviews – Side By Side Comparison 2017

A while back, I was also looking for the best Nespresso machine. However, what I found in my internet search were reviews with long sales pitches on each Nespresso machine without any comparison between these machines. After spending 20 to 30 minutes reading such Nespresso reviews, it did not help me to compare the differences between similar Nespresso machines such as the Nespresso Citiz vs Pixie.

Since I have already researched on each of these Nespresso machine, I decided to write this review so as not to waste my time and efforts already spent on this topic. To make it easier to decide on the best Nespresso machine, I am compiling all my findings in a comparative manner.

This article will be covering the following Nespresso Espresso Machines:

  1. Nespresso Innissia
  2. Nespresso Pixie
  3. Nespresso Citiz
  4. Nespresso Vertuoline
  5. Nespresso Lattissima Plus
  6. Nespresso Lattissima Touch
  7. Nespresso Lattissima Pro

To provide a quick overview, these 7 machines can be classified into 3 groups and their main differences are as follows:

  • Nespresso Innissia, Pixie  and Citiz – produce only espresso automatically
  • Nespresso Vertuoline – make both coffee and espresso automatically
  • Nespresso Lattissima Plus, Touch and Pro – make espresso and milk-based drinks automatically

This is a long article. If you know the type of drinks you need to make, you can jump to the relevant sections.

Contents

Let us start with the Nespresso Innissia, Pixie  and Citiz. Nespresso Innissia, Pixie  and Citiz are very similar models both in appearance and functions, with some slight differences amongst them.

Nespresso Citiz vs Pixie vs Innissia – Similarities

Let’s first take a look at the similarities in features between them before going into their differences shortly.

Fully Automatic Espresso Brewing

All three espresso makers make you espresso automatically in simple steps. Simply lift the lever. Slide in the Nespresso coffee capsule. Place your cup under the coffee dispenser. Select the drink option. And you get the espresso from capsule to cup automatically.

19 Bar Pressure Pump

They all come with a 19 bar pressure pump. This is more than the ideal brew pressure of 9 bars required for optimal espresso extraction. Thus you can be sure to get maximum extraction of flavours from the coffee, which results in a rich brown crema on top of your espresso.

Thermoblock Technology

All three machines makes use of the thermoblock heating technology and take the same time of only 25 seconds to heat up for use. Blinking lights show that heating is in progress. When it is done, the same lights turn steady.

Energy Saving

They will automatically shut down after being unused for 9 minutes. You can however, re-programme this value to 30 minutes.

Two Drink Volume Options

In all these machines, there are 2 preset drink volume options – espresso and lungo. If you prefer a different drink volume, you can override these values to your preferred volumes. The buttons are also backlit for ease of use.

Used Capsule Collection Container

In all three machines, the used capsule will be ejected into the used capsule collection container when you lift and push back the lever. This container can hold up to 11 used capsules.

16 Nespresso Capsules Welcome Pack

For all 3 machines, a pack of 16 different Nespresso coffee capsules are included to give you a taste of each one. This gives you the chance to find out your favourites before ordering a larger quantity for any particular flavour.

Nespresso Citiz vs Pixie vs Innissia – Differences

Here are their differences for each feature.

Compact

They are all very compact with very similar width and depth.  What is noticeably different is their height and weight. Pixie and Innissia are similar in height and weight but Citiz is taller and heavier than the both of them.

Nevertheless, they are all compact enough to fit into almost any corner of your kitchen.

Design

In terms of design, Citiz and Innissia have a more modern design while Pixie gives a more industrial look.

Simple Controls

They all have very simple controls. All three have 2 buttons for two drink options – espresso and lungo.

However, there is a slight difference in the way they power up. Pixie has a separate third button for switching the machine on and off. For Innissia and Citiz, their two drink buttons double up as power button and will power up upon any of the two buttons being pressed.

Water Tank

All three machines comes with detachable water tank for easy refill and clean up.

However, there are differences in their water tank capacity. Being the largest, Citiz also has a large water tank capacity of 34 ounces ( or 1 litres ). Pixie and Innissia both have a smaller water tank capacity of 24 ounces ( or 0.7 litres ).

Able to Accommodate Large Mugs

You are able to use large mugs with all three machines.

Innissia and Pixie have a foldable drip tray which can be folded up to accommodate large mugs. Upon removal of the mug, the drip tray will fall back to its upright position. This ensures that any coffee drips will fall right into the drip tray as you remove the mug.

For Citiz, it uses a pivoting cup tray which can be folded up to accommodate large mugs. Its drip tray is a separate piece by itself.

Ease of Cleaning

All three machines have removable drip tray, used capsule containers and water tank. Hence, it is easy to clean them.

However, there are slight differences ( although of no concern ) in the way to remove the drip tray and capsule containers for the machines. For Pixie and Innissia, the capsule container sits on the drip tray. So you have to pull the drip tray together with the capsule container.  For Citiz, the drip tray and capsule container are removed individually.

Features Unique to Pixie Only

Pixie has a unique empty water tank alert feature not found in the other two machines. When the refilling of water tank is required, the red backlights along the sides of the espresso maker will light up.

In addition, Pixie has a cable guide under the machine to hide the excess cable. This helps to make your kitchen top neat.

Nespresso Citiz vs Pixie vs Innissia  – Cons

There are some negative points for these 3 models.

No Built-in Milk Frother

First, they can only make espresso. If you want to make cappuccino or latte, you have to purchase a separate milk frother such as the Nespresso Aeroccino Plus Milk Frother to froth milk for your cappuccino or latte.  Although this milk frother can froth milk for you automatically, you still have to pour the frothed milk into your cup of espresso when frothing is completed.

Can Only Use Nespresso Capsules

Next, these 3 models only use the Nespresso coffee capsules. This means you do not have the option to choose your own coffee blend.  This may not be a concern since Nespresso has a wide variety of coffee blends you could choose from.

Unable to Make 2 Cups Of Coffee Simultaneously

Lastly, there is only 1 coffee sprout. So you can only make 1 cup of coffee at a time. This is fine unless you are using it to entertain guests regularly. In that case, it’s better to get a more versatile, high duty espresso maker such as the DeLonghi ESAM3500 Magnifica.

Nespresso Citiz vs Pixie vs Innissia  – Which Espresso Maker to buy?

Nespresso Inissia Espresso MakerNespresso Pixie Espresso MakerNespresso Citiz Espresso Maker
Nespresso InnissiaNespresso PixieNespresso Citiz

Nespresso Pixie and Innissia are actually pretty similar, with Pixie being more expensive. Unless you like the red backlights to alert an empty water tank or the separate power button or the industrial design in Pixie, I would go for Innissia which I have seen it offered at under 100 dollars.

However, if you like a large water tank, the Nespresso Citiz is a better option.

Nespresso Citiz vs Pixie vs Innissia  – Should I buy them?

If price, ease of making espresso, ease of cleanup, space constraints are your concerns, these inexpensive and compact fully automatic pod-based espresso machines are ideal for you. However, that is provided that you only need to make espresso.

Nespresso Vertuoline Coffee and Espresso Maker

The Nespresso Vertuoline Coffee and Espresso Maker is a very different type of coffee maker from the previous 3 models.

This coffee maker is a newer product from Nespresso. It can make you both coffee and espresso using a different type of Nespresso capsules – the Vertuo capsules.

It uses a revolutionary centrifusion technology to extract the crema for your coffee drink. This technology rotates the capsule up to 7000 times per minute to mix the ground coffee in the capsule with water.

In addition,  this machine also makes use of an automatic blend recognition system which allows the coffee maker to read the barcode on the rim of the capsule cover and adjust the parameters for brewing accordingly for the coffee blend used.  This system gives you the best results for different  coffee blend with just a touch of the button.

Nespresso Vertuoline vs Nespresso Citiz, Pixie and  Innissia  – Differences

Besides being able to make both coffee and espresso, here are the other advantages of the Nespresso Vertuoline in comparision with Nespresso Citiz, Pixie and  Innissia.

Fast Heating Time

In terms of heating time, the Nespresso Vertuoline heats up in just 15 seconds. Much faster than the previous 3 models.

Ease of Cleaning

Similar to the previous 3 models, the water tank, drip tray and used capsule containers are removable for easy cleanup.

What differs is that Nespresso Vertuoline has a predefined cleaning procedure. When activated by user, the procedure will run 3 cycles of water from the water tank through the internal circuits and out of the coffee outlet.

In addition, Nespresso Vertuoline also provides a descaling alert to the user when descaling is required.

Water Tank

Nespresso Vertuoline has a water tank capacity of 40 ounces, which is larger than the previous 3 models.

Used Capsule Container

Again, Nespresso Vertuoline  also has a larger capacity of 13 used capsules for its used capsule container.

Nespresso Vertuoline vs Nespresso Citiz, Pixie and  Innissia  – Similarities

Just like the previous 3 models, Nespresso Vertuoline Coffee And Espresso Maker also has the following advantages.

Ease of Use

The Nespresso capsule system allows you to make your coffee drink from the capsules automatically by simply placing in the capsules into the machine and making your selections.

Adjustable Cup Support

An adjustable cup support allows large mugs to be used.

Energy Saving

After 9 minutes of inactivity, it will shut off automatically.

Able to Customize Water Volume

You can adjust and store the preset water volume for coffee and espresso to your preferred volume.

Welcome Pack of 12 Nespresso VertuoLine capsules

This machine comes with 12 different type of Nespresso VertuoLine capsules for you to have a try at its different flavours.

Nespresso Vertuoline – Cons

There are some negative points for the Nespresso Vertuoline Coffee and Espresso Maker

No Built-in Milk Frother

This coffee maker does not come with a milk frother. Hence, you will need a separate milk frother to make milk-based coffee drinks such as cappuccino and latte.

Can Only Use Nespresso Vertuo Capsules

For the VertuoLine, there are only 10 selections for coffee and 4 selections for espresso. Given that the normal Nespresso capsules or capsules from other brands can’t be used in this machine,  you have quite a limited choice of taste.

Have to be Careful when Loading Capsule

You need to be cautious when you are inserting the capsule as there are sharp points inside the machine.

Foamy Crema

If you are picky about your espresso, you may not like the crema produced which is more foamy than those produced with a typical espresso maker.

The 3 Lattissima models are very similar. Hence, let us look at their similarities before going into their differences.

Lattissima Plus vs Lattissima Touch vs Lattissima Pro – Differences

Auto-Cleaning of Milk Sprout

All three models comes with the function to auto-clean the milk sprout by running hot water through the milk sprout.

However, the mode of activation and period of rinsing differ among the machines.

The Lattissima Plus and Touch models has a “clean” button to activate this function while Lattissima Pro requires you to turn the milk regulator knob to “clean” mode.

In terms of the period of rinsing, the process lasts 10, 16 and 15 seconds in Lattissima Plus, Touch and Pro respectively.

In terms of water tank capacity, Lattissima Plus has the smaller water tank capacity of 30 ounces ( 0.9 litres) while Lattissima Touch and Pro have a larger water tank capacity of 44  ounces (1.3 litres).

Milk Container Capacity

In terms of milk container capacity,  Lattissima Touch and Pro have the same capacity of 12 ounces ( 0.35 litres ) while Pro has a larger milk capacity of 16 ounces (0.5 litres)

In terms of types of drink options, Lattissima Plus has the least options while Lattissima Pro has the most options.

For Lattissima Plus, the options are cappuccino, latte, espresso and lungo.  For Lattissima Touch, it has 2 extra options of ristretto and  hot milk. Nespresso Lattissima PlusNespresso Lattissima TouchNespresso Lattissima Pro

All three models are great for making cappuccino and latte automatically.

However, my preference is leaning towards Lattissima Pro for various reasons.

  1. First, it has a larger capacity for water tank, milk container and used capsule containers. The larger capacities mean that I can make more coffee drinks before I need to top up water tank and milk container or empty the capsule container.
  2. Next, Lattissima Pro also has the shortest heating up time. That means I can get to prepare my drink faster.
  3. Another attractive point is that it has the most drink options –  ristretto, espresso, lungo, cappuccino, latte and hot milk. With its option of providing hot water from the hot water sprout in the side recess, I can even make Americanos.
  4. I also like that I can use larger mugs with Lattissima Pro with its higher height clearance for the position of its coffee sprout.

How To Choose The Best Nespresso Machine?

Okay. Now we have seen all 7 Nespresso machines. How do we choose the best Nespresso machine for home use?

In my opinion, these are the most important considerations.

Price

The most important thing is your budget.

These 7 Nespresso models can be divided into 2 main price groups. For Nespresso Citiz, Innissia, Pixie and VertuoLine espresso makers,  they are under 200 dollars. For the Lattissima models, it is between slightly under 300 dollars to under 500 dollars.

The main difference between the 2 groups will be the automatic milk frothing capability.

Features

Knowing what features you really need from the machines is important. From there, you can narrow your search and look at other features like design and extra features.

However, if automatic milk frothing capability is your main need but you have limited budget, you may wish to consider getting a separate milk frother.
